An incredibly cold start to the national championships! The temperature hovered around 2 degrees Celsius all day, and the sun stayed hidden behind overcast for the better part of the racing.
An uncharacteristic North-Easterly breeze blew unsteadily, averaging 4 knots in the morning and building throughout the afternoon, with a few gusts getting up to 15 knots. The racing was close, with Queens and U of T ending the day with no more than a single point between their combined division score for first.
The sun took the frost off the docks, and brought with it a more reasonable temperature of 9 degrees Celsius. The wind came from the North while the course was set, steady between 5-8 knots, before swinging hard to the left, causing some races to be abandoned. It finally settled in the West and built to 12 knots, with gusts up to 16, allowing the sailors to fight Montreal’s challenging westerly current. McGill was able to gain momentum and challenge the top two spots, however Queens and U of T remained in first and second respectively all the way until the end of the day.
