We sail mostly in the United States, competing in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA). NEISA is the most competitive division of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA); the american national organization. NEISA boasts 7 of the 10 top teams in the country, including the leading team. As one might guess, this leads to stiff competition on the water and lots of great sailing. The 420, Flying Junior (FJ), lark and tech make up the classes of boat sailed in NEISA. College sailing is all white sail, as you may notice no spinnakers flying; and we're no exception. While slowing the races down, it keeps them tight and tactical.
We also sail in Canada, competing in the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CICSA). Every year, CICSA organizes an Eastern Region Championship, National Fleet & Team Racing Championships and a Student Yacht Racing World Cup (SYWoC) Qualifier, which we all attend.
At home, we practice in club 420s out of the beautiful Royal St-Lawrence Yacht Club (RStLYC). The team's activities extend throughout the year. Practice starts in late August for returning veterans, and we run team practices in the fall from September until the lake freezes over in November. We compete in regattas throughout the fall.
The social activities of the sailing team also extend far past the onset of snow in Montreal. Team dinners, pub nights and an annual ski weekend are some of the events that keep us going through the winter. Being self-funded, our members also participate in fundraisers during the off-season. In short, the McGill Sailing Team is a good time.
